OHSU Toxicology Fellowship

The Oregon Poison Center (OPC) in conjunction with the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Residency in Emergency Medicine sponsors a two-year training fellowship in medical toxicology. Applicants must have completed training in an Emergency Medicine residency program recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties prior to commencing the fellowship.

The toxicology fellowship program is designed to provide a full spectrum of toxicology exposure, and to prepare the subspecialty resident in medical toxicology for board certification in medical toxicology.

The program’s goal is to provide a broad based educational experience to the subspecialty resident in medical toxicology. This will include critical exposure to patients with acute ingestions, didactic sessions, directed reading, several forums for discussion, analysis, and interaction with faculty members board certified in medical toxicology, and an educational environment conducive to exploring new issues, developing inquisitiveness and research questions in toxicology and occupational medicine. The program will be a basis on which a life-long career in toxicology is launched, which stimulates the subspecialty resident in toxicology to develop clinical acumen, judgment, maturity, medical decision making skills, and technical skills, while incorporating the evolving state-of-the-art knowledge into one’s practice. It is the intention of this program to impart these foundations that will enable the graduate to continue life-long education and fill academic or community-based positions such as a toxicology consultant to an AAPCC-certified Poison Control Center, an academic emergency physician with special teaching and research emphasis in toxicology, a practitioner/consultant in toxicology, or an occupational medicine physician with special expertise in toxicology.
