The Oregon Poison Center (OPC) is a 24-hour health care information and treatment resource serving the state of Oregon, as well as northern Nevada, and the greater Alaskan territories. Each student will spend time in the Poison Center to experience how poisoning or toxic exposure is handled prior to hospital care.

The Oregon Poison Center is a 24-hour health care information and treatment resource serving the state of Oregon, as well as northern Nevada, Alaska and Guam. The poison center was established by an act of the Oregon State Legislature in 1978 to provide emergency treatment information for patients experiencing a poisoning or toxic exposure. The Oregon Poison Center is also responsible for providing public outreach and education to health care professionals. Website: www.ohsu.edu/poison/
MISSION
The Oregon Poison Center mission is to provide care for people exposed to poison in their homes and to make prompt referrals to hospitals or clinics when necessary. We are committed to cost-saving management of poison-exposed people. Poison prevention education is another important component of our mission.
GOALS AND EXPECTATIONS OF THE OREGON POISON CENTER
- Arrive at 9:45 a.m. for an orientation and a brief power point slide show of the how OPC functions.
- Sit side-by-side with one of our nurses and listen in by headset (9:45 to whenever rounds start) to listen in on calls to the poison center from parents, patients and physicians.
- Poison Center work rounds: meet with the faculty, fellows and other students and resident to discuss cases that they have call back. Usually starts between 10:00 and 10:30 in the poison center conference room and goes to 12:00.
- Lunch on your own, 12:00 to 1:00.
- 1:00: Afternoon education in the conference room. Sessions vary from lectures to Journal Club, to M&M conferences. Uusally lasts until 3:00p.m.
- Students wishing more time listening to call with the RNs can sometimes arrange to stay after 3:00 or come back in the evening for more poison center time.

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early to your scheduled shift.
Check in with Charisse Pizarro-Osilla in Room 550 of the Campus Services Building.
Take the elevator to the 5th floor, turn left as you leave the elevator, turn right down the hallway.
Room 550 is down the hall to your left.
