HAZMAT and Chemical Risk Information System (CRIS)
The CRIS Center services provide information about chemicals (Material Safety Data Sheets) used in industry and evaluates information for industry management, exposed workers and the general public about chemicals encountered in manufacture, production, transport and end-use of these agents.
By state mandate, OPC is notified in all cases of potential HAZMAT response scenarios. The OPC coordinates the provision of related toxicology information to on-scene personnel in conjunction with medical management information provided by OPC physicians. OPC is involved with statewide HAZMAT, Advance HAZMAT Life support classes (AHLS) and Weapons of Mass Destruction planning and maintains extensive online and text references for addressing these challenging issues.
Occupational and Environmental Toxicology
The goals of clinic participation include gaining experience in obtaining a detailed exposure history, understanding the confounding factors which complicate occupational toxicology assessments, understanding the limitation of analytical tests in the occupational setting and gaining familiarity with the economic medico-legal aspects of the field. The fellow may participate in an occupational medicine clinic once a month with a private practice occupational medicine physician. We also participate with management of lead cases in conjunction with the health department. A two week toxicology laboratory rotation is also required to understand the utility and limitation of the various toxicologic assays.
Regional Hospitals
The reputation of OPC and the participation of OHSU residents in off-campus rotations serve to facilitate access to patients with toxicologic illness cared for in other Portland-area hospitals. There are resident education programs in several local hospitals serving the entire metropolitan area, all accessible in 5 to 20 minutes. Cases cared for at these hospitals comprise many of hospitalized cases followed by OPC staff via traditional phone follow-up.
Biomedical Information and Communication Center (BICC)
BICC is the site of the OHSU medical library as well as a variety of high-technology services. OHSU conducts research in tele-medicine as well as providing tele-education for the state. These programs, in addition to computer support services, training in medical informatics and biostatistical expertise, are housed within BICC.
